Kidlit Interview with Sarah Darer Littman
DANNA ZEIGER: With antisemitism continuing to rise nationally and globally, Sarah Darer Littman’s book SOME KIND OF HATE couldn’t be better-timed. Not only have recent inciting incidents sparked serious concern and heightened security in places of worship and schools, but they have cultivated genuine – and familiar – fear for Jewish people around the world.DANNA ZEIGER: With antisemitism…

Deepfake Excerpt
What happens when anyone can make a video of you saying anything?
Tumblr media
Dara Simons and Will Halpern have everything they've ever wanted. They are the rulers of Greenpoint High's geekdom, overachieving in every way, and it's an intense competition to see who will be valedictorian. One the entire school is invested in. That is, until Rumor Has It, the anonymous gossip site, posts a video of Dara accusing Will of paying someone to take the SAT for him. When the video goes viral, suddenly Will's being investigated, and everyone's wondering how he pulled off cheating on the SAT. But Dara swears that she didn't say any of those things, which seems a little hard to believe since it's her in the video. Did Will cheat? Is it Dara saying he did? Who's lying, and who's telling the truth? The answer is more shocking than anyone realizes...

Stella and Farida have been best friends forever, but lately things have been tense. It all started when Stella's brother came home from his latest tour with the US Marines in Afghanistan paranoid and angry. But Stella won't talk about it, and Farida can tell she's keeping something from her. Desperate to help Rob, Stella thinks she just needs to get him out of the house. She definitely didn't expect going to the movies to end with Rob in handcuffs for assaulting one of her classmates after his anger spiraled out of control. When a video of the fight goes viral, everyone has an opinion of Stella and her "violent vet" brother. The entire school takes sides, the media labels Rob a terrorist sympathizer, and even Farida is dragged into the mess despite not being there. As the story continues trending, Stella will have to decide just how far she's willing to go for the truth, even if it means admitting her own failures.

Day 11/May 11: Read a book (at least one chapter)
The book I read was called 'Anything but Okay' by Sarah Darer Littman. I began reading it at school and brought it home. The story is about a girl name Stella who started running for class president, but after her brother, Rob; who recently returned from the military; gets in trouble defending a Sikh kid, her chances dwindle. Soon, best friend Farida is dragged into the mess.
I love this story because it deals with social justice issues. Mainly racism but there is a chapter about sexism too.
(spoiler alert from here on out!!!)
I ended up reading two chapters; 13 and 14.
Chapter 13
Stella loses, but she does get 2nd place so it isn't a complete loss.
She thinks about joining the school paper since she can't be class prez.
She wants to hang out with Farida but can't because there's a ton of business at her parents restaurant (which is good bc earlier in the story they were being harassed (is that the word?) for being Muslim)
Sad times. Stella watches a movie and eats some ice cream since she can't hang w/ Farida. Adam (her boyfriend *eye roll*) hangs out instead.
He suggests volunteering to campaign for Jack Witham, the rival of Mayor Abbot, who is the main reason that Stella's brother is in trouble in the first place.
Speaking of her brother, he talks to his university counsellor about the whole situation, and she advises going to a group therapy session with a ton of other veterans.
Chapter 14
Stella + her family decide to do a plea bargain (for Rob) the Monday after the governor election.
Stella tells her family about the whole campaign situation, Rob says how he's always worse than Stella and stuff, an fight (not physical) breaks out, things were said, Stella rushes to her room to consult Farida.
The two talk, Rob comes in and apologises to Stella.
Then those two talk about how life is unfair and stuff, then Rob leaves.
Rob is doing well in the therapy group by the way.
(Not about the chapters, just my opinion on the book so far:)
One thing I don't like about the book is Adam, aka the love interest/soon-to-be-boyfriend. I find his character useless as he doesn't give any depth or plot to the story at all. Like they're talking about how racism is bad, and how we shouldn't sexualise minors, and then in between Stella is just like "ʷ⁻ʷᵉʷˡ 👉👈 ʰᶦˢʰ ᵈᶦᵐᵖʷᵉˢ 🙇 ᵃʷ ᵖʷᵉᵗᵗʸ ᶜᵘᵗᵉ 🦋🦋ᵘʷᵘ🥺👉👈"
I did end up shipping Stella with someone else because I dislike Adam so much. I won't say who it is yet because he's actually a complete jerk until you learn about his 🤽deep 📖backstory™️ in chapter 12. The character development was rushed, I will admit. But I still like this ship better. Maybe I just don't like the fact that Stella told Adam (her crush/someone she barely knows) before Farida (her BEST FRIEND who she's known for YEARS), maybe it's maybelline. Who knows. I don't.

That’s what’s so terrifying about letting go of bulimia, the thing that’s defined me for so long — I’m afraid that without it, I’ll crumple into a heap of nothingness on the floor.

Would it be alright to use an adult memoir as a comp title for a YA novel if it deals with similar themes and subject matter?
I've talked about this before, but, I feel like there are two different kinds of comp and everyone kinda conflates them. Personally I use both kinds of comps in slightly different ways all the time, and I think that's fine -- it just depends who I am talking to and what I am trying to convey.
PLEASE NOTE: AFAIK, I am the ONLY person who uses these terms lol. So probably don't start bandying them about as if they are a "thing" -- this is just how I think about it, and it might be helpful for you, but I suspect nobody will know what you are talking about if you use these terms out loud. :-)
One is a sales comp: These are books that are on the shelves right now, where I think my book might appeal to the same audience, and I know you don't know ME, but you know these other books, and one can extrapolate that if they did really well exploring these themes etc for this audience, mine might too! This is likely to go in the "stats" section of the query, like "AMAZINGBOOK is a YA contemporary complete at 85,000 words; it will appeal to fans of searingly honest, ripped-from-the-headlines titles like THIS IS WHERE IT ENDS by Marieke Nijkamp and SOME KIND OF HATE by Sarah Darer Littman"
(This kind of comp also serves double duty -- it shows that YOU KNOW the audience and the market, that you are well-read in the field, that you aren't one of those jokers who are like "this will appeal to everyone from age 1 to 101!" -- (no it won't) -- or "There is nothing to compare this to because there are simply no YA books with boy main characters!" (um yes there are, you just don't read much.))
The other is a TONE comp: "Terminator meets Jane Austen." "Wes Anderson meets the Brothers Grimm." "Think Bridgerton, if it was set in Wakanda." "The cuteness of Paddington with the murderous heart of Chucky." So, these things can be books - but they can also be more like, "aesthetics", cultural touchstones, movies/TV, whatever -- something that gives you a good idea of what the book FEELS like, you know what I mean? This is more likely to go as part of a "hook", log-line, or elevator pitch.
These two kinds of comps are just accomplishing slightly different goals. So I lean toward thinking, look, fiction vs nonfiction, kids/YA vs adult -- ehhhhhhhhhhhhh it's not really a great SALES comp. I can only speak for myself, but I don't read a ton of adult nonfiction, and if somebody came to me with a comp I had never heard in a totally different category, I'd be like "uh...????"
That said, also, IF the memoir is so popular and whatever that you feel like they totally MUST have heard of it, and it really is apt, I don't see why you can't weave it through in some kind of way as a TONE comp. So like, "AWESOMEBOOK is like MOMMIE DEAREST on steroids" would be fine -- even if we haven't read Mommie Dearest or seen the movie, we are aware of that as a cultural touchstone and can imagine what "Mommie Dearest On Steroids" might feel like.
Make sense?

One of my favourite authors is Sarah Darer Littman. (To be honest, she's probably my favourite author. Check out her books! They're really good!) My absolute favourite book of hers is called "Anything But Okay." We've owned this book for about three years now, and it honestly looks like we've owned it for a really long while. It's been read so many times that it's actually falling apart. During quarantine, my sister discovered she had a website. And at the very bottom of that website was a "contact me" button. We both own a few of her books and love reading them. So we sent her a message talking about how much we loved her books. With most authors, when you send them a message, you usually get an advertisement back from them. (You know. The usual "i have a book coming out on ___ date! Make sure to buy it!") Less than two hours later, we had an email back. And it was an actual response. Which we both were insanely shocked about. (I've been asked by my sister not to share her reply because it's personal...) To basically sum it up, she was talking about how the university she works at had just started online learning. Her day was really hectic, and our email had made her day. She had also mentioned that she'd like to send us signed bookmarks. Which our parents were fine with. Skip forward about three days. We get a package in the mail. It was a small package. Just about the size of a book. Yup. There was a bit of a "wtf???" moment that happened. I guess this is the time to mention that she had a book that was set to be released in October. (It's called "Deepfake" if you'd like to check it out...) And yeah. That's the story of how we received a signed copy of a book that hadn't been released yet. Plus signed bookmarks and a letter. To say we both freaked out is an understatement. (I'd like to mention that we have two copies of this book. The signed copy and our reading copy. The signed book got read when we first got it and then we put it where it wouldn't get damaged. When the book came out in October, we bought our reading copy. Which is the copy that gets dragged everywhere and that we both margin scribble in.) And to be honest, she earned a ton of respect from me. It shows that she really does care about her fans. And as a fan, that means so much to me.
